Background
Reading a literary text involves more than just skimming through words on a page; it requires engagement, analysis, and interpretation. Close reading is one of the ways that would allow you to engage with the text and to pay more attention to the details rather than the general idea. Close reading involves examining the details and nuances of the language, structure, and meaning. The goal of close reading is to uncover deeper layers of meaning, understand the author's choices, and appreciate the complexity of the text.
Practice
Two students were given a text to read closely. As the attached file shows each student practiced close reading differently. Both students one and two attempted to annotate the text given to involve actively and engage with the text by making notes, markings, and comments directly on the page. These annotations mainly help both students to analyze the text and fully understand and appreciate the nuances and complexities of the text.
Write a paragraph about close reading guided by the following questions.
Are the annotations on the margins in both samples a good way to start a close reading? Why?
Some people may see these students as being very messy! What do you think?
Would you do the same if you were asked to do a close reading?
