    The Effect of Sentence Types on Essay Clarity and Coherence

    Overall course objective and plans:

    This short course aims to equip learners with the essential knowledge of sentence types, which will allow them to effectively generate ideas for their essays. The course is divided into two main sessions.

    Session one will be an introduction to sentence types, which will:

    - Define and explain the four basic sentence types (simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex).

    - Provide examples of each sentence type to enable learners to differentiate between the different varieties of sentence structures and characteristics.

    - Test the learners’ knowledge of sentence structure with a perfectly designed quiz.

    Session two will shed light on the effect of sentence structures on forming and writing effective and engaging essays, which will:

    - Explain the basic structure of an essay: introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.

    - Tackle each essay section and explain its role in conveying ideas effectively by using the different sentence structures discussed in session one.

    - Provide an essay sample to enable learners to envision the main features discussed.

    - Shed light on the effect of using transitions to organize and convey ideas clearly and effectively.

    Welcome to Introduction to Text Annotation, a course created by Assistant Professor Dr. Fawziah Alharbi at the Faculty of Language Studies - KSA, AOU. 

    This course is designed for native and non-native English speakers who are interested in improving their close reading skills through text annotation. In this course, you will learn that the act of reading is similar to the act of meeting someone for the first time. When you meet someone for the first time, you pay attention to the way they are dressed, the way they act, and the way they present themselves to you. Reading the text is similar to meeting someone for the first time. This course aims to introduce you to the technique of Text Annotation and the multiple methods of annotating the text to help you skillfully interact with the text. Additionally, this course will sharpen your analytical skills and equip you with the necessary skills to improve how you approach the text.

    Reading material and supplemental materials were provided for demonstration and educational purposes, not for commercial use.

    Learning Outcomes:

    • Identify the different ways to annotate the text by annotating a given text.

    • Interact with the text through writing brief comments and questions in the margins.

    • Integrate “comparative annotation” to the text by utilizing your background knowledge to enrich the text.

    • Identify the theme and the development of the characters of a literary text by highlighting lines and writing comments in the margins.

    • Implement “cultural and historical” context annotation to enrich your understanding of the text.

    • Examine the text closely and critically by completing annotation activities of a text.
